Tandberg Television powers CanalSat HD launch

Digital encoding specialist Tandberg Television has won a contract to supply its high definition (HD) MPEG-4 AVC video encoding and distribution system to French satellite pay-TV operator CanalSat for the launch of its HD service later this month.

CanalSat has deployed a Tandberg Television HD video head-end with statistical multiplexing and Tandberg EN5990 HD MPEG-4 AVC encoders which will enable CanalSat to more than halve the bit-rate required by HD MPEG-2.

"HDTV is a reality and as more and more content becomes available in HD format we are committed to ensuring that our subscribers enjoy a rich and varied choice of HDTV programming," said CanalSat's technical manager Christophe Hennequin.

"Tandberg Television's commitment to HD MPEG-4 AVC means that we can launch HD with high bandwidth efficiency and take advantage of the benefits of advanced statistical multiplexing as our service grows," he added.

Earlier this week Tandberg Television unveiled its second-quarter results, with revenues of $100.1m, up 40% on the year, and pre-tax profits of $21.3m, up from $12.2m a year ago.
