By the end of 2005 more than 2.6m households in Europe were using a personal video recorder (PVR), according to new research from IMS.
By 2010 the European PVR market is forecast to reach over 41m homes, with growth expected to come primarily from operator deployments of integrated PVRs, though digital terrestrial and free satellite PVRs will make a significant contribution to the total market.
IMS said that before 2005 the only successful PVR in Europe was BSkyB's PVR, Sky+. This changed in 2005 as pay-TV operators including Sky Italia, Telewest, ntl, Viasat, Casema, and Premiere either launched or announced plans to launch a PVR service.
Further growth took place in 2005 thanks to strong adoption of digital terrestrial PVRs in the UK, France and Germany, said IMS
