BSkyB is giving its 8m subscribers the opportunity to create their own personalised on-screen TV listings. Sky said its revamped electronic programme guide (EPG), being rolled out this week after its biggest overhaul since the launch of Sky Digital in 1998, would allow customers to create their own personalised grid of their favourite 50 channels for the first time.
The new-look Sky Guide is being rolled out automatically to subscribers and will take until February 28 to complete. The guide retains its familiar blue and yellow look and feel and organises the 500-plus channels available on the Sky platform over 15 programme genres: Entertainment, Lifestyle & Culture, Movies, Sports, News, Documentaries, Kids, Music, Radio, Shopping, Religion, International, Gaming & Dating, Specialist and Adult.
The re-arrangement of channels over the 15 genre categories—the old guide had just seven categories—means most channel numbers will change by February 28. Sky said radio channel numbers would now have four digits, beginning with zero.
Sky customer products director Brian Sullivan said: "Sky has a huge choice of programmes that match the individual interests of millions of viewers. With this upgrade, we're taking personalised choice even further by giving customers the chance to tailor the Sky Guide to suit their own preferences."
According to MediaWeek magazine, the revamp has caused disputes with ITV over the positioning of at least two of its channels. And earlier this week it was reported that Teachers' TV had complained to Ofcom over its new Sky EPG position.
