Freeview will overtake Sky in 2008 to become the UK's largest digital television platform, according to latest research by media buyer Zenith Optimedia.
By 2008 Freeview will have 8.8m households compared with Sky's 8.7m, said the Financial Times which had seen the Zenith study.
"Freeview is growing at a faster rate than anyone expected," the FT quoted from Zenith's report.
By the end of 2010 just 4% of UK homes would be reliant on analogue television.
"The 2012 switch-off target looks eminently achievable, though the taxpayer may have to pay up to convert the last analogue hold-outs," said Zenith.
