BSkyB strategy director Mike Darcey has reportedly told MPs that the Freeview platform is not capable of leading Britain's drive towards a digital-only television future.
According to MediaGuardian, Darcey told the Commons' culture committee, currently probing the Government's analogue switch-off timetable, that Freeview resembled "an analogue platform with not very convincing go-faster stripes" since its basic technology lacked full interactivity and would not be able to support high-definition TV.
Darcey was quoted as telling MPs that Freeview would be "the platform for the elderly and economically inactive".
Meanwhile, Sky has promoted Sky One controller James Baker to the position of managing director of Sky Interactive, replacing Ian Shepherd who is heading for Vodafone.
