News bulletins reporting the fall of the Berlin Wall, England's 1966 World Cup victory and the Tiananmen Square protests are among 80 released by BBC News Interactive for the Open News Archive.
The online pilot allows UK web users to watch, download and edit the bulletins for non-commercial purposes as part of the Creative Archive Licence, launched last April.
Managed by the BBC, the bfi, Channel 4 and the Open University, the Creative Archive Licence Group makes content (moving images, audio and stills) available for download under the terms of a single, shared user licence scheme.
Content is available in QuickTime, Windows Media, MPEG1 and MP3 formats.
BBC News director Helen Boaden said: "This trial is an important step in allowing us to share with our audiences the extraordinary news archive which the BBC has recorded over the years. We look forward to getting their reaction."
The BBC said it would be releasing further content over the coming months.
