DirecTV streamlines Latin America

Pending the regulatory green light, DirecTV will pay $579m to integrate its Latin American business with other satellite television businesses also owned by News Corporation in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Chile.

Some Latin American customers, such as those in Brazil and Mexico, will receive digital TV from Sky. But in countries including Chile and Columbia, they will be shifted to DirecTV.

US media analysts said the merger would increase the opportunity for profits. The New York Times quoted one - Rich Greenfield of Fulcrum Global Partners - as saying: "DirecTV management is spinning this as a big long-term opportunity, and while we do not disagree with that view, we believe it will take years for this opportunity to bear fruit."
