GDB to release 500,000 IPTV STBs in UK

Brighton-based IPTV specialist Global Digital Broadcast (GDB) has signed a deal with digital technology group VeHDa to release 500,000 IP set-top boxes within the UK consumer market by the end of 2008.

GDB aims to have 100,000 VeHDa boxes—which incorporate digital terrestrial receivers—installed by engineers from VeHDa's sister company, Play TV, by Christmas.

GDB co-founder Jim Deans said: "Our marriage to VeHDa and Play TV finalises our route to market, allowing GDB to continue with its engineering and software platform development while knowing that consumer interests are being handled by a team of experienced professionals."

GDB says the VeHDa boxes are pre-programmed with more than 700 broadband TV channels from 84 countries. In addition, GDB's own niche and local channels (such as TVBrighton and TVWorthing) will be available, as well as movies, entertainment and sport from Play TV.
