DVD recorder shipments to leap, says IMS

US market research group IMS is predicting a big leap in sales of DVD recorders as consumers upgrade their home entertainment systems. IMS said after smaller than expected growth in 2006, the consumer DVD recorder market worldwide would reach 59m units, generating around $20.2bn in manufacturing revenues.

IMS said set-top boxes with inbuilt digital video recorders were being rolled out by pay-TV operators at relatively low cost in North America, Western Europe, and some parts of the Asia Pacific region.

But recording onto optical discs would gain momentum as new DVD recorders allowed consumers to create menus and other value-added propositions that until recently could only be achieved using software applications on PCs.
