Scandinavian broadcaster SBS Broadcasting has paid an undisclosed sum for the interactive Channel Five Finland, under a broader plan to spin off interactive music channels from its general interest TV stations, according to Variety.
"We plan to launch interactive music-formatted channels making use of the synergies from our general-interest TV stations but also to a large extent the radio know-how we have acquired from our 53 radio channels in the Nordic territories," said Christian Anting, SBS's senior vice-president of digital media.
SBS Radio became the largest radio operator in Sweden following a merger in late 2003 between SBS's Swedish radio operations and Bonnier Radio. On top of its earlier acquisition of the Danish and Norwegian radio operations of Clear Channel and Norsk Aller, the move also made SBS the largest radio operator in Scandinavia.
Buoyed up by a strong financial performance in 2003, the company has recently announced the October 1 launch of a TV channel in the Flemish section of Belgium, aimed at women aged 20-49.
