US digital TV pioneer Zenith Electronics Corporation has licensed its digital reception technology to set manufacturers Mitsubishi and Sharp.
Under the agreement, Mitsubishi and Sharp will deploy Zenith's 8-VSB (Vestigial Side Band) digital transmission technology.
The system is at the heart of the US ATSC digital TV standard adopted by media regulator the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and is one of several digital television patents owned by Zenith.
Under FCC rules, virtually all new television sets sold over the next three years must have 8-VSB demodulators.
Established in 1918, Zenith's Emmy award winning technologies include digital high definition TV, flat screen cathode ray tubes, stereo TV and remote controls.
Since 1999 Zenith has been a wholly owned subsidiary of LG Electronics.
