New Zealand's Freeview, offering five television channels and two radio stations, has launched on digital satellite promising a "new era in television". The free-to-view service, which has been launched with NZ$25m (£9.3m) of government funding, is available to viewers via a NZ$300 (£111) satellite set-top box.
Next year the Freeview service will launch on digital terrestrial television, with an expected coverage of 75% of the country. The satellite service reaches the whole of New Zealand.
Freeview is initially broadcasting TV One, TV2, TV3, C4, and Maori Television, as well as Radio New Zealand National and Radio New Zealand Concert. More channels, including a family channel and news channel, will be launched later.
New Zealand's Freeview is key to the country's strategy of switching off analogue television between 2013 and 2017.
