The German regional state of Berlin-Brandenburg, which made history last year by becoming the world's first terrestrial digital-only region, is to further expand its DTT offering, with local media authority Medienanstalt Berlin-Brandenburg (MABB) inviting bids for additional capacity, which can be used for television, radio and multimedia services such as EPGs and interactive applications.
As the transmission costs will be partially subsidised and the tender is open for international broadcasters, this could open the gate for further foreign channels to enter this large TV market. BBC World, Eurosport and CNN are already part of the DTT line-up. Interested companies can send in their applications for capacity, which will be available in August, until 9 June.
Berlin-Brandenburg's current offer, which can be received by more than 200,000 households, comprises 27 TV channels and one multimedia application, ZDFdigitext.
