Australian pay-TV firms agree 2007 switchover

While the Australian government considers how best to ensure its recently pushed-back switchover target of 2011 will be met, the country's pay-TV operators have announced a March 2007 deadline for switching off their analogue broadcast systems.

As The Australian reported, the country's two-largest pay-TV providers, Foxtel and Austar, have 1.8m customers between them. Of those more than 75% are digital.

"They (the subscribers) are taking (digital) out in their droves," Foxtel chief executive Kim Williams told The Australian.

"We think the issue may be that we arrive there sooner (than March 2007)."
