SES Astra procures new 1M satellite

Satellite operator SES Astra is looking to replace its 1H spacecraft with a new satellite, Astra 1M.

The Luxembourg-based company said Astra 1M would provide in-orbit backup for the Astra fleet at 19.2 degrees East, and would carry 32 active Ku-band transponders.

SES Astra said the new satellite was being procured "ahead of the projected satellite replacement schedule in order to provide additional security to support SES Astra's growth at the 28.2 degree East orbital position serving the UK and Irish markets".

Astra 2C, currently in service at 19.2 degrees East, will be relocated to 28.2 degrees East following the successful launches of Astra 1KR and Astra 1L, to provide additional capacity to meet growing demand in the UK and Irish markets.
